Tentokrát je hlavním hrdinou sedmnáctiletý Sean, student střední školy a – jak jinak – velký automobilový nadšenec. Pochopitelně miluje rychlou jízdu a riskantní sázky a pochopitelně s tím má velké problémy. Díky této jeho proklaté zálibě se s matkou neustále stěhují, takže není divu, že pohár trpělivosti nejen maminky, ale především policie jednou přeteče a po dalším z jeho excesů putuje Sean za oceán až do Japonska, kde v hlavním městě žije jeho otec.

Ten se má, jako správný příslušník amerických ozbrojených sil, postarat o to, aby se jeho nevycválaný synek konečně zklidnil, řádně navštěvoval vzdělávací ústav a zanechal pošetilostí, spojených s automobily. Jenže osudu se člověk zkrátka nevyhne: a auta jsou nade vší pochybnost Seanovým osudem. Takže okamžitě po příchodu do školy zjistí, že spousta jeho japonských spolužáků taktéž propadlo kouzlu silných motorů a že nejoblíbenější zálibou těchto motoristů je tzv. „driftování“, což je technika, kterou Sean ještě nezná, avšak pod dohledem se ji rychle doučí.

To už se ale zaplétá s nerudným spolužákem, který, jak se ukáže, pracuje pro místní jakuzu, tedy japonskou mafii a s jeho půvabnou přítelkyní. Takže se ani nenadál a už má opět problémy – tentokrát však jde skutečně mnohem o víc než o jeden rozbitý auťák.

Děj ovšem není to, co je na třetím dílu Rychle a zběsile to nejpodstatnější. Tím je především ambice tvůrců nakrmit příznivce této série další pořádnou porcí „rychlé a zběsilé“ akce. A protože hlavní cílovou diváckou skupinou mají být především teenageři, není ani na místě jakkoliv horlit nad pramalou invencí a originalitou dějových zvratů, případně nad praktickou absencí výraznějších hereckých výkonů.

Hlavními hrdiny jsou tu tak jako tak pořádně „vytuněné“ nejnovější modely automobilů světových značek a jejich rychlá kola, na kterých unášejí diváka do světa, kde snad ani neexistují nějaká fyzikální omezení a kde je možné opustit na okamžik hranice času a prostoru. Nutno uznat, že mladý režisér se do tohoto bezpochyby náročného podniku pustil s vervou a výsledek jeho režijních počinů co se alespoň akčních scén honiček a závodů týče působí vcelku suverénně, v některých scénách, v nichž se předvádí „automobilové choreografie“ se mu podařilo dosáhnout dokonce i několika působivých výsledků.

Takže nakonec se dá konstatovat, že hlavní úkol byl splněn. Divák, který si přišel zvednout hladinu adrenalinu ztotožňováním se s odvážnými muži v superrychlých strojích si přijde rozhodně na své a zklamán nebude. Nebude však pravděpodobně ani nijak překvapen či ohromen. Tak jako většina „trojek“ i Rychle a zběsile: Tokijská jízda celou sérii vcelku nikam výrazněji neposouvá.
